Photography has completely transformed the imaginations of the past and reality within the visual cultural history of humanity in a time of fewer than 200 years. In this seminar, photography (hence other optics-based disciplines) will be examined in terms of reality, memory, time, representation, narrative, construction of meaning, aesthetics, etc., discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the medium with examples through a historical perspective, while drawing from a comparative framework with painting.
