From Ennigaldi-Nanna to Pericles, from Gaius Clinius Maecenas to the Medici, from Pierre Crozat to Paul Durand-Ruel, from Ambroise Vollard to Peggy Guggenheim, and extending to contemporary times, the history of “patronage” and “collecting” in Western art will be evaluated in parallel with the sociological, political, and commercial developments of historical processes. What is “philanthropy”? How does it transform and structure societies? These questions will be explored. The issue of “art production” will be analyzed by comparing Europe and Turkey within these contexts.
