In this seminar, we will discuss how contemporary sociologists such as Lefebvre, Castells, and Bourdieu conceptualize and analyze the formation of everyday life and art within space and time in urban contexts.

Bahattin Akşit received his bachelor’s degree from Middle East Technical University in 1968, his master’s degree in 1971, and his PhD in Sociology in 1975 from the University of Chicago. He joined the Department of Sociology at METU as an assistant in 1968 and was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and full professor in 1991. In addition to his academic work at METU, he served as department chair, associate dean, and director of the Institute of Social Sciences. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of London for six months and at Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University for two years. He retired from METU in 2007 and worked at Maltepe University’s Department of Sociology until 2022. His research areas include: Rural, small-town, and urban sociology; Sociology of Education; Sociology of Religion; Disaster and Earthquake Sociology; and the Sociology of Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries.
